Joyce comes across as being a self-centered mother, who cares more about herself and desires than anybody else. She has narcissistic tendencies, as shown when she abandoned her daughter Eleanor not once, but twice, leaving the second time because she thought she should give becoming an actress another shot. Despite this, it seems as though she loves Eleanor till a certain degree—as shown through sending her the occasional letter.
