After First Day of Sophomore Year[]

Dr. Jamie Ryan is first seen when Devi is complaining about what her classmate, Ben, said to her, which is that she is an "unfu*kable nerd". Devi asks Dr. Ryan if she agrees with Ben, but Ryan retorts that the kid sucks and she should just ignore him. She then introduces Devi to something that could really help her: a grief journal.

That evening, Devi bursts into her therapist's office once more, right when Ryan is preparing for a date. But Devi exclaims that she needs her help, so she and Dr. Ryan both take a seat. Devi's problem is that she wants to be a normal girl who can get a boyfriend, even though as both Ryan and Devi concede, she wouldn't make a good girlfriend at the moment. Dr. Ryan tasks Devi with doing something this year that makes her happy and makes her feel good about herself, to which Devi replies that she knows what she needs to do.
