... said goodbye is the tenth and final episode in Season 4 of the Netflix series, Never Have I Ever. It is also the fourtieth episode overall.
Synopsis[]
The last weekend of summer coincides with a festive occasion - and on the brink of their new lives, Devi, her family and friends have lots to celebrate.
Plot[]
Devi is overjoyed to have finally been accepted into Princeton on the last day of school. She can't wait to share the news with Ben. He informs Devi that he's leaving for New York to start a summer internship at a law firm before college.
On Graduation Day, Devi and her friends bid farewell to each other, taking pictures together to capture the memories. She is named valedictorian and says a final goodbye to Ben before his departure. Devi, Fabiola, and Eleanor spend the rest of the summer together until Paati's wedding.
Paati's wedding is scheduled for the day before Devi leaves for New Jersey. Paati gives Devi permission to invite her friends to the wedding, including Paxton, Aneesa, and Ben. Devi extends invitations to everyone, but she feels sad that Ben won't be able to attend since he's already in New York.
Devi suggests that Nalini should remove her thaali since she's now with Andres. Nalini explains that Andres doesn't mind her wearing the jewelry and that she has grown accustomed to it. Nalini reminds Devi that she needs to start packing as she will be too tired to do it before the wedding. Kamala mentions that Devi could visit her frequently at Princeton, as she and Manish are moving to Baltimore.
Devi expresses her reluctance to visit Kamala, fearing that her college friends will find out she has an attractive cousin. Devi asks her mother if Fabiola and Eleanor can spend the night, but Eleanor keeps bringing up the fact that it's their last time together. Suddenly, Devi learns that the trio won't be able to see each other often due to their different schedules. Eleanor predicts that they won't reunite until the following summer, which is a year away. Nalini urges Devi to wrap up the gathering and send her friends home so she can pack for Princeton.
That night, Devi struggles to pack and experiences a mini panic attack, overwhelmed by the idea of leaving her life behind and fitting it all into one suitcase. She sends Ben a photo, reminding him of their first friendly interaction from freshman year. Meanwhile, Ben is at a nightclub with his friends who are also interns. When he sees Devi's text, he realizes how much he misses her. Devi informs Ben that all their friends will be attending the wedding. Ben's friend advises him not to be rude to the girl he likes and suggests treating her right so she won't move on to someone else. Ben's friend questions whether Ben had ever been kind to the last girl he liked, making Ben reflect on his behavior toward Devi. Ben admits that expressing his feelings was scary, and his friends tease him for being a coward.
The following night, Paati has a mixed wedding ceremony, incorporating Indian and Jewish traditions. Devi reunites with Fabiola, Eleanor, Addison, Trent, Aneesa, Paxton, and Lindsay. The group contemplates how they should get drunk, but Nalini interrupts, urging Devi to say goodbye to their Indian friends and relatives.
Relatives express concerns to Devi about moving away from her family, but Kamala reassures her that she will always be there for her. Kamala asks Devi if she and Ben have become a couple, but Devi claims that Ben didn't really like her that much. Devi expresses gratitude to Kamala for being the cool older sister she never had.
Later that night, Devi, Fabiola, and Eleanor hang out together for one last time and share some smuggled alcohol. Devi fears losing her childhood friends, and the trio reflects on their crazy adventures throughout high school, praising Devi for her bravery and for including them.
Nalini enters Devi's room and insists on taking her back to the reception for Paati's first dance. She realizes that she was being too harsh on Devi because she was afraid of letting her go. Devi begins packing her suitcase but has a breakdown because she feels like she's leaving behind her room and her father in New Jersey. Nalini finds Devi and helps her calm down.
Nalini offers to assist Devi with packing and assures her that everything will be okay. Together, they pack Devi's belongings for college and return to the reception. Devi and Kamala perform a fun dance to a South Indian song, getting everyone to join in on the dance floor. Paxton pulls Devi aside and reveals that he plans to become a full-time teacher after completing his degree at ASU. They promise to be there for each other even when they're apart because they make great friends.
At the end of the reception, the group plays a game of "Never Have I Ever" and is surprised by the revelations. Devi starts a sentence with "Never have I ever hooked up with," but her attention is caught by Ben's arrival at the reception. She rushes to meet him, and Ben confesses that he traveled all the way from New York to finally express his feelings for her.
The two admit their love for each other, and with Kamala's help, they sneak out of the wedding. That night, Nalini finally takes off her thaali. Devi and Ben head to his house and hook up, feeling great about it the morning after. Early the next morning, Ben helps Devi get dressed for her flight, and she hurries back home.
Nalini drops Devi off at the airport as she departs for college, saying her final prayers willingly. The show concludes with a montage showing Devi and Ben successfully navigating a long-distance relationship between New York and New Jersey. Fabiola enters Howard, Eleanor pursues her interest in directing, with Trent seemingly studying film-making to assist her in small movie projects. Paxton studies Education at ASU, while Manish and Kamala enjoy their lives in Baltimore.
