Synopsis[]
Watching Devi struggle with a painful memory, a nervous Rhyah orders Des to keep his distance. Paxton enlists Eleanor's help to break news to Trent.
Plot[]
Rhyah tells Nalini how she caught Des and Devi making out, Rhyah is taken back when Nalini states that she will allow Devi to date her son. She even tries to convince Nalini that she does not want to pressure her to say yes. However, Nalini says that Des has been a good influence on Devi. She states it is under the condition Devi and Des act respectable and like they both come from decent families.
Later that night, Devi is about to perform at the school spring concert, her first since her father had a heart attack in front of her. Things are going well, though. As it turns out, Nalini has been genuinely nice to Des. However, when the concert starts, Devi realizes that this is her first time performing in the concert since her father’s death. She has a panic attack, and Rhyah finds her crying in the bathroom next to the garbage can.
Rhyah has her take some deep breaths to slow her breathing, so she is no longer hyperventilating. Her mother’s friend then tells her that grief is an expression of love and to remembers how much he loved her. She offers to take her home, but Devi wants to continue performing in the concert. She then hugs the young woman, but unbeknownst to Devi, Rhyah has a concerned look on her face when she gets back to the concert.
When the recital is over, she pulls her son aside and tells Des he can longer see Devi. She is concerned that Devi would be a bad influence on him. Specially with him being on his way to Stanford and Devi is going down a path that may derail his future. Sure, it is not empathetic, but some parents are cutthroat regarding their children.
Later, Des tells Devi that he cannot see her tomorrow, and grows more distant.
Ben overhears this conversation between mother and son and tells Devi. When she confronts Des about it, he confirms it. To add salt to the wound, after Devi asks why he would listen to his mother, he does not really know how to respond. However, he adds that dating her is not worth pissing off his mom. He also brings up that she does pay his cell phone bill. As a result, a hurt Devi throws an iced coffee in his face.
Rhyah is there and brings the kids back to Nalini to tell her what Devi did to her precious boy. Rhyah's behavior towards Devi is revealed, and Nalini tells her off because what Devi has been through is unimaginable, but nevertheless, she has persevered.
Later, Devi apologizes to Ben for yelling at him when he gave her the bad news. Ben in turn even gives her a coupon for one free boink.
